Speak for the San Diego River Mouth

Conservation

Docents educate the community about the San Diego River Mouth and the unique habitats surrounding it.

Stop by to visit our docents at the San Diego River Mouth!

One of San Diego's prime birding hotspots is the mouth of the San Diego River, where freshwater meets the sea and uniquely important wildlife take refuge. This hidden gem is popular for beach goers, but many miss out on the incredible biodiversity it has to offer! From salt marsh to sage scrub to sand dune habitats there is something surprising here for the whole family! These natural wonders exist right next to a much-loved dog beach, but tread carefully; even the smallest of footsteps can disrupt sensitive species.

Join us on an adventure at the San Diego River Mouth with a guided walk! Passionate docents share their knowledge about native/endangered species and the vibrant coastal ecosystems they depend on. Connect with San Diego's rich biodiversity, from the elusive Ridgway's Rail to rare native plants - some of which can only be found in San Diego! Nature enthusiasts, beach goers, and dog-walkers are welcome. Our guided walks offer an enriching experience that connects you with the wonders of the San Diego River Mouth.

Interpretive walks depart at 2pm every other Sunday. Meet us where the trails converge to the North of the bike path (GPS: 32.755111, -117.249111).

BARK Rangers

Our delicate coastal ecosystem faces many threats, and dogs are part of the solution! Bring your furry friends and take the BARK Rangers' pledge to help protect wildlife.

Bag your pet's waste and dispose in a trash can

Always leash your pets as soon as you leave the beach

Respect wildlife by staying on trails

Know where you can go and help inform the community

BARK Rangers earn a free bandana, treats, and so much love for being great stewards. A little action goes a long way to ensuring birds, dogs, and people can coexist for centuries to come.

Are you passionate about conserving wildlife? Become a docent!

Docents lead bi-monthly nature walks, help monitor endangered species, and pave the way for community change in a multi-use landscape. Our focus is on "pawsitive" reinforcement to protect this fragile ecosystem, and we need dedicated docents to share this message of responsible recreation. Who knows what budding birders you could inspire!

No previous experience is required, and all educational materials will be provided. To join the team, just reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator at cgonzalez@sandiegobirdalliance.org.

Help birds, dogs, and people thrive together.

The docent table is nestled in between sage scrub, coastal salt marsh, and sand dune habitats. Our bi-monthly interpretive walks also meet at this location.
