Volunteer Habitat Restoration Events

Upcoming Events

The San Diego Bird Alliance conservation team hosts work parties where volunteers help restore habitat for endangered species by removing invasive plants, replanting native plants, and conducting other land management activities (putting out protective structures for chicks, mending fences, spreading mulch etc.) No experience is required and these events are open to the public. Planting events occur throughout Fall and Winter, with maintenance, monitoring and restoration in the Spring.

SDBA partners with passionate community members like YOU, the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department, Mission Bay Park Rangers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) to manage and restore habitat for the endangered California Least Tern at four main locations in Mission Bay:

  • Mariner’s Point
  • North Fiesta Island
  • Stony Point
  • FAA Island

This is a great way to get a taste for the work that we do to protect endangered species in Mission Bay, and is concentrated during field season January-April. For questions, RSVPs, or directions, contact Cristina Santa Maria, our Conservation Manager, at csantamaria@sandiegobirdalliance.org, or at 858-273-7800 x 106.

SDBA also partners with the Port of San Diego, USFWS, TRNERR, Emerald Keepers, Coronado Rotary, Silver Strand Beautification Project, and City of San Diego Rangers to restore coastal sage scrub habitats in Southern San Diego at these sites:

  • Sweetwater Bike Path
  • Emory Cove
  • Grand Caribe Shoreline Park
  • Tijuana Slough
  • Otay Valley Regional Park
  • 10th Street

Our work at these sites is centered around protecting and improving habitat for birds and wildlife along our shorelines and in our regional park throughout the year. For questions, RSVPs, or directions, contact Coral Weaver, our Conservation Coordinator, at cweaver@sandiegobirdalliance.org.

Keep an eye out for upcoming habitat restoration events on our events calendar. Wear long pants, sturdy shoes, and sun/rain protection. Tools and water will be provided. Bring a reusable water bottle for refills. Work parties for large groups can be arranged.
