On March 11, 2024 San Diego Audubon Society supported Senator Steve Padilla's Legislation (Senate Bill 1178 + Senate Bill 1208) to collect fees from multinational corporations that are responsible for polluting the Tijuana River and to block the new Landfill in that watershed. This is an important and difficult issue that affects all the residents and the wildlife around them.
San Diego Audubon joined community leaders, labor leaders, and environmental advocates during the press conference. Our own Karina Ornelas spoke, and here is what she had to say during the press conference:

Our mission at San Diego Audubon Society is to defend our region's birds, biodiversity, and threatened habitats, and to advocate for a cleaner, healthier environment. The Tijuana watershed is home to over 370 species of birds, including five federally threatened and endangered species. All of them are at further risk due to the toxic water pollution that has plagued the area for decades.
Nuestra misión en San Diego Audubon Society es defender las aves, la biodiversidad y los hábitats amenazados de nuestra región y abogar por un medio ambiente más limpio y saludable. La cuenca de Tijuana alberga más de 370 especies de aves, incluidas cinco especies amenazadas y en peligro de extinción a nivel federal. Growing up in San Ysidro, I have seen first hand the effects of the pollution on my community, like the strong sewage smell that we daily face, and the quality of the air where we can't enjoy outdoors or even have doors or windows open because that smell is just bad and strong for all the people living here in San Ysidro.
Al crecer en San Ysidro, he visto de primera mano los efectos de la contaminación en mi comunidad, como el fuerte olor a aguas residuales que enfrentamos a diario y la calidad del aire que no podemos disfrutar al aire libre ni siquiera tener puertas o ventanas abiertas, porque ese olor es simplemente malo y fuerte para toda la gente que vive aquí en San Ysidro.
San Diego Audubon Society supports Senator Padilla’s effort to identify who is polluting our communities and our parks, and to provide incentives that will help reduce those impacts. From endangered birds to San Ysidro residents, we need and deserve this level of accountability and responsibility to protect our wildlife, our environment, our health, and our communities.
