Hundreds Turn out to Love Their Wetlands

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by Kendall-Frost Marsh Reserve on Saturday, February 5th, 2022 for our annual Love Your Wetlands Day celebration!

This was our best-attended Love Your Wetlands Day ever, and shows the growing appreciation for how important our coastal wetlands are, and how much we need to prioritize their restoration. Hundreds of people joined us at Kendall-Frost and Crown Point to celebrate, learn, and join us for guided tours, marsh walks to repair nesting rafts & clean up trash, kayak outings, tule boat making, and more.

We’re thrilled so many people could attend to celebrate our wetlands, and want to give an extra thank you to all of our speakers:

  • Cori Peek-Asa, Ph.D., Vice Chancellor for Research, UC San Diego
  • Cody Martinez, Chairman, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation
  • Stanley Rodriguez, Ed.D., Iipay Nation of Santa Ysabel
  • Maya Vicaldo, Barona Band of Mission Indians
  • Todd Gloria, Mayor, City of San Diego
  • Tasha Boerner Horvath, Assemblymember, State of California
  • Nathan Fletcher, Chair, Board of Supervisors, San Diego County
  • Terra Lawson-Remer, Supervisor, San Diego County
  • Jen Campbell, M.D., Councilmember, City of San Diego
  • Joe LaCava, Councilmember, City of San Diego
  • Judith Muñoz, Chair, Mission Bay Park Committee
  • Kit Pogliano, Ph.D., Dean of Biological Sciences, UC San Diego

Thank you as well to all the organizations that were a part of this year’s event, and to all the elected officials who paid a visit to the marsh! We are also extremely grateful for all of the work of the Mission Bay rangers to help organize this event. For a slideshow of images from the event, see here. Our friends with the American Academy of Pediatrics also wrote up this awesome summary of the event. They have been extremely supportive of the ReWild project due to the health benefits that restore wetlands provide via improved air and water quality.

Now’s an exciting time to champion our wetlands: our ReWild coalition is gaining strength and support every day, and we need that support more than ever to push the city’s De Anza Natural proposal to restore more wetlands, provide low-cost accommodation, and ensure improved open access to the land.
